Electric Vehicle Finance Guide

Electric Vehicle Finance: What Do Lenders Look For?

Understanding electric vehicle finance requirements before you apply can help your business prepare a stronger application and identify suitable lenders. Australian lenders typically assess the business, its ability to repay, the electric vehicle being purchased and the overall transaction.

For businesses considering an electric car, ute, van or truck, understanding what lenders assess before applying can help avoid unnecessary applications and identify lenders whose policy better suits the transaction.

What do lenders look for when approving electric vehicle finance?

Australian lenders will generally consider your business trading history, ability to meet repayments, credit profile, existing commitments and the electric vehicle itself. They may also look at the purchase price, age, make and model, seller and intended business use. The exact criteria vary between lenders, which means the same EV finance application may be viewed differently by different financiers.

Is Electric Vehicle Finance Assessed Differently?

In many cases, an electric vehicle is still assessed under normal commercial vehicle or asset-finance criteria. The fundamentals remain similar: the lender wants to understand who is borrowing, whether the business can support the repayments and whether the vehicle provides acceptable security for the proposed finance.

However, electric vehicles can introduce additional considerations. Some models are relatively new to the Australian market, purchase prices may differ from comparable petrol or diesel vehicles, and lender appetite can vary between passenger EVs, commercial utes, vans and electric trucks.

This is why the question is rarely simply, “Does this lender finance EVs?” A more useful question is, “Does this lender’s policy suit this business, this electric vehicle and this transaction?”

Important: lender policies are not identical. A business that falls outside one lender’s criteria may still have suitable options elsewhere. Finance is always subject to individual assessment and approval.

8 Factors Lenders May Consider for EV Finance

Although every application is different, most business electric vehicle finance assessments come back to a combination of the following factors.

1

How Long Your Business Has Been Trading

Trading history helps a lender understand how established the business is. A longer and more stable trading history can make the application easier to assess because the lender has more evidence of how the business performs over time.

A shorter trading history does not automatically mean finance is unavailable. It can, however, affect which lenders are suitable, the documents required and whether additional strength is needed elsewhere in the application.

2

Revenue, Cash Flow and Ability to Repay

The lender needs to be comfortable that the business can meet the proposed repayments alongside its existing operating expenses and finance commitments.

Depending on the lender and application type, this may be assessed using financial statements, tax returns, BAS, business bank statements, accounting data or other information that demonstrates current business performance.

It is not simply about turnover. The lender may consider the overall financial position of the business and whether the proposed repayment appears sustainable.

3

Your Business and Director Credit Profile

Credit history can influence both lender choice and the terms available. Lenders may review the credit profile of the business entity and, where relevant, its directors or guarantors.

Previous or existing finance, repayment conduct, enquiries and adverse credit information can all form part of the assessment.

A less-than-perfect credit history does not necessarily mean there are no options. It does mean lender selection becomes more important, as different lenders have different levels of appetite for more complex credit profiles.

4

The Electric Vehicle You Are Buying

The vehicle itself is a major part of an asset-finance application. Lenders can consider the make, model, purchase price, age, condition and type of electric vehicle being financed.

A new passenger EV purchased from an established dealer may fit a different policy from a used commercial EV, an electric ute or a high-value electric truck.

For commercial vehicles, lenders may also look at specifications such as vehicle class, body configuration or intended application.

5

New vs Used Electric Vehicle

Both new and used electric vehicles may be financeable, but used vehicles can require additional assessment.

The lender may consider vehicle age, current market value, condition and how old the EV will be at the end of the proposed finance term. Older or less common vehicles may have a narrower lender market than a new mainstream model.

If you’re considering a used EV, it can be useful to assess the finance position before committing to the purchase. Our New vs Used Electric Vehicle Finance guide explains these considerations in more detail.

6

How the Vehicle Will Be Used

Business purpose matters. A vehicle used by a director for business travel can present a different scenario from an electric ute working on construction sites or an electric truck operating in a delivery fleet.

Lenders may consider whether the proposed use is consistent with the vehicle and whether there are any industry-specific risks associated with the application.

For businesses financing commercial EVs, clearly explaining how the vehicle will generate or support business income can help present the transaction properly.

7

The Seller and Purchase Transaction

Where you buy the electric vehicle can also matter. Dealer purchases are often straightforward because the lender can verify the supplier, vehicle and tax invoice through an established commercial process.

Private-sale or unusual transactions may still be possible, but some lenders have different requirements for seller verification, valuation, vehicle checks and settlement.

The finance application should match the actual transaction, including the correct purchaser, seller, vehicle details and purchase price.

8

The Overall Finance Structure

Lenders also look at how much is being borrowed, the proposed loan term, any deposit or contribution and whether a balloon or residual payment is requested.

A structure that reduces the regular repayment may improve short-term cash flow but can leave a larger amount payable at the end of the term. The appropriate structure depends on the business and should not be chosen on monthly repayment alone.

For many business vehicle purchases, a chattel mortgage may be considered, although available structures depend on the lender and transaction.

Does the Type of Electric Vehicle Matter to the Lender?

Yes. “Electric vehicle finance” covers a much broader group of assets than passenger EVs alone. Woodward Finance works with businesses financing electric and electrified vehicles across different commercial applications.

What Documents Might You Need for Electric Vehicle Finance?

There is no single document list that applies to every EV finance application. Requirements depend on the lender, finance amount, business profile and whether the application qualifies for a streamlined or lower-documentation process.

Depending on the scenario, a lender may ask for some combination of the following:

✓
Business and applicant identification details
✓
ABN and business entity information
✓
Vehicle quote, invoice or purchase details
✓
Recent business bank statements
✓
BAS or other evidence of business turnover
✓
Business financial statements or tax returns for full-doc applications
✓
Details of existing loans and finance commitments
✓
Insurance and settlement information once the finance is approved

Some applications need considerably less information than others. The objective is to match the application to a lender whose documentation requirements fit the strength and profile of the business.

Can You Get Low-Doc Electric Vehicle Finance?

Potentially. Established businesses may be eligible for low-doc or streamlined commercial vehicle finance, depending on the lender and application.

Low-doc does not mean that the lender ignores the financial position of the business. Instead, qualifying applicants may be assessed using a reduced or alternative set of documents rather than a full set of current financial statements and tax returns.

Factors such as time in business, finance amount, asset type, credit profile, GST registration, property position and available supporting information can influence whether a low-doc option is available.

A useful distinction: needing low-doc finance is not the same as having a weak application. Many established businesses simply do not have their latest financial statements prepared when they need to replace or add a vehicle.

How Can You Strengthen an Electric Vehicle Finance Application?

There is no way to guarantee finance approval, but a clear and complete application makes it easier for a lender to understand the transaction.

Know Exactly What You Are Buying

Have the make, model, purchase price, seller and vehicle details ready where possible. A defined purchase is generally easier to assess than a vague finance request.

Be Clear About Business Use

Explain how the EV will be used and why the purchase makes commercial sense for the business.

Provide Current Information

If financial or bank information is required, supplying clear and current information can reduce unnecessary back-and-forth during assessment.

Disclose Existing Commitments

Existing loans and finance facilities form part of the business’s overall position. Accurate information helps avoid issues later in the credit process.

Explain Anything Unusual

A recent credit event, unusual purchase, private sale or change in business circumstances may be easier to assess when the context is provided upfront.

Choose the Lender Before Applying

Repeatedly applying to lenders without understanding their policy can be counterproductive. The aim is to identify an appropriate lender before an application is submitted.

Why Lender Selection Matters for EV Finance

One of the most important points for businesses to understand is that lender policy varies.

Two lenders can assess the same business and the same electric vehicle differently. One may be comfortable with the asset type but require more documentation. Another may have a stronger policy for an established business but a different approach to used vehicles, commercial utes or trucks.

This becomes particularly relevant when the transaction is outside a simple new passenger vehicle purchase — for example, when you are financing an expensive commercial EV, buying a used electric vehicle, purchasing through a private seller, seeking low-doc finance or adding several EVs to a business fleet.

Woodward Finance has access to more than 60 lenders across major banks and specialist commercial financiers. Rather than sending the same application everywhere, the objective is to understand the scenario first and identify lenders whose policy is appropriate for the business and asset.

Electric Vehicle Finance Approval FAQs

What do lenders look for when approving EV finance?

Lenders generally consider the business’s trading history, cash flow and ability to repay, credit profile, existing commitments and the electric vehicle itself. Vehicle price, age, make, model, seller and intended business use may also influence the assessment.

Is it harder to finance an electric vehicle?

Not necessarily. Many electric vehicles can be assessed under normal commercial vehicle finance policies. However, lender appetite can differ depending on the vehicle type, purchase price, age and business application, so lender selection still matters.

How long does my business need to be trading to finance an EV?

There is no single minimum that applies across every lender. Trading-history requirements vary, and shorter-established businesses may have fewer options or need to provide additional information. An established trading history generally gives lenders more information on which to assess the business.

Can I get electric vehicle finance without full financials?

Potentially. Some established businesses may qualify for low-doc or streamlined commercial vehicle finance. Eligibility depends on the lender, finance amount, business profile, asset and supporting information available.

Does my credit history affect business EV finance?

Yes. Credit history can affect lender selection, approval and potentially the terms offered. However, individual lenders have different credit policies, so adverse or imperfect credit does not automatically mean there are no finance options.

Do I need a deposit to finance an electric vehicle?

Not always. Deposit or contribution requirements vary between lenders and transactions. Some eligible businesses may be able to finance a high proportion of the purchase price, while other scenarios may require a contribution.

Can a used electric vehicle be financed?

Potentially. Lenders may consider the used EV’s age, condition, value, make and model and how old it will be at the end of the proposed finance term. See our New vs Used Electric Vehicle Finance guide.

Can a sole trader get electric vehicle finance?

Yes, subject to lender criteria and approval. Sole traders can be eligible for business vehicle finance where the lender is satisfied with the business, credit position, vehicle and supporting information.

Do lenders finance electric utes and electric trucks?

Potentially. Eligible electric and plug-in hybrid utes, light commercial vehicles and electric trucks can be considered for business finance. Lender appetite can vary according to the specific vehicle and transaction. See our Electric Ute Finance and Electric Truck Finance pages.

Does applying through a broker improve the chance of approval?

A broker cannot guarantee approval. What a commercial finance broker can do is assess the scenario before applying and compare lender policies to identify lenders that may be better suited to the business, asset and finance requirement.
